Do You Dream?
It will suddenly make art history an interesting subject.
You won't find more big-shot names of Italian art stuck in one place at the same time. Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Giotto, Titian, Michelangelo, Raphael… we can go on and on mentioning iconic names that might ring a bell. The list is impressive, but even more is the artwork found within the Uffizi walls. The palace itself is a masterpiece of architecture. If you haven't gotten it by now – the Uffizi is definitely an AbsoluteVisit.

Quick Facts & History

  • This museum in Florence, Italy displays some of the most famous works of the entire Renaissance period in a very unique way: chronologically. This allows visitors to seemingly watch the entire Renaissance era unfold and develop right before their very eyes.
  • In the year 1966, a horrible flood overtook the city of Florence, and in a remarkable act of selflessness, tourists and locals alike rushed to the Uffizi Gallery to rescue the irreplaceable artwork before the flood could reach it. From that day on those volunteers were known as mud angels and acknowledged as the rescuers of Florences art.
  • The Uffizi Museum has 45 rooms filled with masterpieces not just from Italy but Germany, Spain and even Holland. Some of its most prominent pieces include Adoration of the Magi, Primavera, and The Birth of Venus.
  • In 1911 the Mona Lisa vanished from the Louvre in France. Two years later, a man named Leonard Vincenzo claimed he was in possession of the masterpiece and attempted to sell it to a wealthy art dealer and the director of the Uffizi Gallery. He was promptly arrested; however, in the meantime the Mona Lisa did in fact hang in the Uffizi Gallery while the paperwork was filed. Leonard Vincenzo claimed he was returning the Mona Lisa to its rightful place in Florence.
