If you like "tramps," it's the place to go.
It's not what you think - tramps, or better yet, tramping is when you set out on a long distance walk or hike with at least one overnight stay. Our #83 AbsoluteVisit is the best for this sport and a nature destination that shouldn't be missed. But Tongariro Alpine Crossing also has a cultural significance. The crossing passes over the volcanic terrain of the active volcano Mt. Tongariro, which creates landscapes that feel "moon like."

Brad & Will's Quick Thoughts

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is often referred to as the best single day hike on the planet. We've had the opportunity to hike many unbelievable places, but no single day spent hiking can top what we experienced hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing back in March of 2010. The extreme diversity of this hike is what sets it apart from everything else. From the beautiful emerald lakes to the rugged lava mountain terrain and of course the magnificent Mt. Ngauruhoe Volcano, you will certainly not be disappointed!

New Zealand is packed with so many incredible places to see and explore. Unfortunately even if you set aside two weeks or even a month to explore the country, you will not even come close to covering all of the wondrous sites that make New Zealand one of the top countries to travel to around the world. That said, we urge you to absolutely make sure that you do not miss the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on your first trip to New Zealand. The 7 hour, 19.4km hike will be an experience that you will remember for the rest of your life!

Quick Facts & History

  • The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4km (12 mi) hike on the North Island of New Zealand near Lake Taupo
  • The hike is considered by many to be The Best Single Day Hike on the planet
  • On the hike you will pass Mt. Ngauruhoe, which was featured as Mt. Doom in the famous Lord of the Rings film
  • It takes the average person 7-8 hours to complete the hike, however it has been completed in less than 90 minutes (running obviously)!

I was told by at least one friend (namely Josh – thanks!) while we were in New Zealand’s North Island, we had to hike around Mount Doom (think Lord of the Rings) on what is known as the ‘World’s Best Day Hike’. After doing a little bit of research and not only confirming that it was in fact known as then ‘World’s Best Day Hike’, we also confirmed that the location was pretty close to Auckland and easily worked it into our road-trip. The technical name for the hike is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The crossing is roughly 18KM (12 miles) and is rated ‘challenging’. The ...  read more

Hike in the Summer
The best time to hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is in the warm summer months. Hiking the trail becomes difficult as snow falls to the ground and during these months you will most certainly need a guide and potentially some technical equipment. During late spring and early fall the weather is still suitable for making the trek on your own. Have fun!
