Tikal, other than being our #85 AbsoluteVisit, was once the largest Mayan city in the world, and today is famous for its large archaeological site. The ancient site dates back to the 4th century and extends over 6 sq. miles. You'll find ancient temples, pyramids, terraces and other architectural structures that are definitely worth the visit and climb.

Tikal, the largest excavated site in all of North and Central America, took thirteen years to uncover and is considered to be the largest city in the Mayan Classic Period, at one point inhabited by between 50,000-90,000 citizens.
Tikal contains monuments dating all the back to fourth century B.C.E., with the citys peak population and history occurring between 200 and 900 A.D.
Throughout its excavation, over 3,000 structures and ruins have been uncovered, including pyramids and temples, right in the middle of the rainforest, trapped beneath the undergrowth and shrubbery.
One of the more prominent and impressive ruins uncovered is the Great Plaza, which resides between two temple pyramids (North and Central Acropolis) and one of the citys five ball courts.
