Size does matter.
At least when it comes to pre-Columbian pyramids. Teotihuacan is our #64 AbsoluteVisit not only because it is known for these enormous structures, but it's also a large residential complex with well-preserved murals and the Avenue of the Dead. The ancient city was established around 100 BC and is most famous for the Pyramid of the Sun, the largest building in the area. It's over 233 ft. high with a massive base of almost 3,000 feet. Now, that's impressive.

Quick Facts & History

  • This Ancient Aztec city in Mexico dates all the way back to 300 BC, where it became a site for great architectural feats, particularly for the time period in which it was occurring.
  • There are three main pyramids of Teotihuacan: The Pyramid of the Sun, The Pyramid of the Moon, and the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpent. The largest is the Pyramid of the Sun, with a height of 210 feet (64 meters) making it the third largest pyramid in the world (and it used to be 249 feet, or 76 meters, tall!)
  • The Aztec people did not use wheels or animals to assist them in the construction of these pyramids or other various buildings because they had no animals to use. Instead they opted for stone tools.
  • It was believed in ancient times by the Aztec people that Teotihuacan was where the world was created, in a cave within the city, causing them to believe caves were sacred. For this reason, the Pyramid of the Sun was built on a cave.
  • Not to be missed in Teotihuacan is the Avenue of the Dead, a 131-foot (40 meter) wide pathway leading to the Pyramid of the Moon. At one point in time this avenue was likely 3 miles (4.8 km) long, but now is only approximately 1.4 miles (2.2 km) long. It received its name from Aztecs of a later period who observed that the surrounding buildings resembled tombstones.
