Santorini in Athens, Greece was once only one island until an underwater volcanic eruption (one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history) 50 years ago sunk the middle of the island and also created several smaller surrounding islands.
Santorini is the only example of a caldera (volcano cauldron) in the world that is inhabited today.
Santorini is famous for its different-colored beaches caused by the unique geology from the volcanic eruption. The beaches are covered in colorful sand and pebbles, and, allegedly, the warmth of the water can be determined by how dark the sand is.
Santorinis largest export is soil, exporting 2,000,000 tons every year all over the world for uses such as concrete. For example, the Suez canal was built with concrete made from Santorini soil.
