Its beauty will make you blush.

Or it might just be residual dust from the red sandstone left on your cheeks, but the hidden city in layers of mountains is truly beautiful to look at and explore. “Petra” literally means rock, which makes sense since the city is an architectural wonderland carved in sandstone. The explorer Johann discovered it in 1812, but the city dates back to the 12th century BC. Nicely tucked between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba (Jordan and Israel), go on a treasure hunt and visit our #16.

Petra is a unique city in that it wasnt completely built but more carved directly out of the sandstone cliffs of Jordan. There are very few free-standing buildings in Petra.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was filmed in Petra in a building called The Treasury which is actually a tomb. The building in the movie was the hiding place of the Holy Grail.
Petra contains over 800 monuments, almost all of which are carved from the sandstone mountains that envelop the city.
The city of Petra was lost, abandoned and in ruins for over 300 years until it was re-discovered in 1812.

Entering the visitors gate to Petra we purchased our tickets which were 33 JD (~$45) making Petra our most expensive sight to date. We were given a map and with the information we had received the prior day we settled in for a long day. Petra is an ancient city that has been carved out of a narrow mountain valley. The area is well known for its rose-red color which it gets from the beautiful rock everything is carved from.
