Once upon a time someone built this fairytale castle.

It's no surprise that it was used as inspiration for Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle. Originally built as a retreat for Ludwig II of Bavaria and homage to Richard Wagner, this 19th century Gothic Revival palace is nestled above a hill in plain site for travelers coming its way. This destination is not only popular because it's our #70 AbsoluteVisit, but also because of its architectural beauty inside and out of the castles' walls.

Built for King Ludwig II, this German castles name also means 'New Swan Stone' from one of Wagners opera characters, the Swan Knight.
Neuschwanstein is one of the most photographed castles in the world, and cameras arent even allowed inside!
This year (2012) Neuschwanstein will appear on a commemorative 2 Euro coin.
The castle served as the inspiration for Sleeping Beautys Castle at Disneyland in California.
It took fourteen carpenters over 4 years just to finish the woodwork in the bedroom alone.
Despite it being built for King Ludwig II, he only slept 11 nights in the castle. There is not even a throne inside, as he died before the Throne Hall was even finished!
