It's a sacred place with a "multiple religious personalities disorder."

That's how we like to think of it at least. Originally, it was home to a roman temple and cathedral, then a mosque was constructed in the 8th century. After that, a cathedral was added inside by Christina conquerors in the early 13th century. The first thing you'll see at this AbsoluteVisit are the immense giant arches and multiple columns of jasper, onyx, marble and granite. The mosque is a great example of different architectures and a holy place full of history.

Officially known as the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, the Mezquita is the cathedral of Cordoba. However, the cathedrals architecture and design is one of the most unique blends of religions in a single religious site. It originally served as a Roman temple and cathedral, later transforming into a mosque and receiving many Islamic architectural additions, and lastly serving as a Catholic cathedral.
One of the most famous architectural feats of the Mezquita is the large quantity of columns, adding up to a total of 856 (originally 1,293) columns made up of jasper, onyx, marble and granite. These columns were collected from other destroyed Roman buildings and preserved from the buildings original decor when it served as a Roman temple.
Technically, the Mezquita is a mosque with a Catholic cathedral inside it, as the Catholic cathedral was actually built as an addition and not a total replacement.

Will and I had 9 full days to divide across the various places we wanted to see in Spain. Both Madrid and Barcelona were must visits and we first allocated 3 days to each.
