No - not those 12 apostles, but the miocene limestone rock stacks sprout from the water off the shore of the Great Ocean Road. The name is purely for tourism purposes, but nonetheless our #82 is an AbsoluteVisit. The road was built by the surviving soldiers between 1919 and 1932 and is considered to be the world's largest war memorial dedicated to the casualties of World War I. The road is 243 km and one thing to keep in mind while visiting – in Australia they drive on the opposite side of the road!
Stretching 151 miles (243 km) along the Australian Coast, this breathtaking coastal roadway was built to honor the memory of those who fought and died during World War 1 and is often regarded as one of the greatest drives in the world.
It took over 3000 returning soldiers eleven years to complete the road, carving it directly out of solid rock.
The road winds past the view of the 12 apostles, a collection of twelve rocks rising out of the sea, created from the erosion of limestone cliffs shaped into caves that eventually collapsed leaving nothing but the 12 stacks of rock behind.
Another impressive site along the drive is the Shipwreck Coat, home to over 160 different wrecked ships gathered over time.
