The halfway-to-hell club was the name given to the 19 men whose lives were saved by the safety net suspended under the floor of the bridge from end to end during construction. The Golden Gate Bridge is our #91 because it is not only the iconic symbol of San Francisco, but it's a marvel of architecture and engineering. Even though it's not made out of gold, it gets its name from John. C. Fremont since it reminded him of a harbor in Istanbul nicknamed Golden Horn.
