After the end of the Persian Empire, Alexander the Great tried to rule the area. What's left now are almost 1,000 cave churches, 40 underground cities, but there could be many more since they keep on uncovering new archeological treasures. Cappadocia, Turkey has one of the most unique defense systems ever employed by a city: over 40 cities have been discovered in Cappadocia underground! It is estimated that there may be hundreds more that have yet to be discovered.
The underground cities provide protection to locals from wild animals and enemy invasions.
In the past during enemy invasions, the inhabitants of Cappadocia would submerge themselves into the underground cities and roll heavy boulders in front of the entrances, sometimes hiding for months, unbeknownst to the enemy above.
There are unique structures located in Cappadocia resembling chimneys, cones and mushrooms that have appeared as a result of sweeping winds and erosion.

We boarded an overnight bus early on the evening of August 12th in Istanbul bound for Cappadocia. Cappadocia is a region is central Turkey best known for its unique moon-like landscape, underground cities, cave churches and hotels and houses carved into the rocks. In addition, it is widely known as being one of the top places in the world to ascend into the sky on a hot air balloon.
