Like it has many others. Alhambra, also known as "The Red Fortress," has been the inspiration for many songs and stories, most notably Washington Irving's Tales of Alhambra. Before it became a palace, it was a fortress built by the Nasrid rulers of Granada. Moorish poets describe the now-royal residence as "a pearl set in emeralds" because of the color of the building and the woods that surround it. You decide which name gives it better poetic justice.
