Nestled above the "Sacred Rock" is the Acropolis of Athens and our #48 AbsoluteVisit. Acropolis literally means "upper city" and that's exactly what it is. Construction began in 447 BC for defense purposes and what is left today has survived years of climate changes, natural disasters and wars. It began as The Pantheon and the Temple of Goddess Athena and later the Erechtheion and the Temple of Nike were added.

The Acropolis in Athens, Greece is approximately 80 feet (24 meters) high, and 50 feet (15 meters) wide. It was started in 447 BC but wasnt completed until 438 BC, mainly being constructed for defense purposes in order to provide a vantage point to observe enemy actions.
There are several famous monuments on top of the Acropolis in Athens, including the Parthenon, Erectheion, the Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea.
There is much controversy over the rightful ownership of many Ancient Greek artifacts. Many years ago, Lord Elgin took almost all of the statues, vases and monuments from the temples in Athens and sold them to the British Museum, where they remain to this day.
