Wat Phra Kaew Visit, AV #38
Before returning to Wat Phra Kaew, Brad and I were talking about it quite a bit. We were actually knocking it pretty hard which pushed our expectations to an extreme low. I distinctly remember us talking about the fact that it was not very big and just not that impressive. Perhaps these were our memories from our previous trip altered by the unbelievable size of the sites we had just seen in Myanmar. Or maybe we were just in a bad mood. Regardless, we were wrong.

AV Trip Photo – THE Emerald Buddha – Wat Phra Kaew – Bangkok, ThailandWat Phra Kaew or Temple of the Emerald Buddha has always been mysteriously named for me and I am sure for others as well. When you go to this site, you might even miss the actual Emerald Buddha! The site itself is fairly large and has enough beautiful detail to fill an art gallery, enough wondrous architecture to write a book about, and as many statues as you would need to wage war against the Terra Cotta warriors. All of this and no mention of the Emerald Buddha.
Well, today I wanted to share the actual Emerald Buddha with you. He is incredible and also incredibly hard to take a photo of. Photography is not allowed inside the temple itself, but if you are patient you can snap off a pretty decent picture of him from outside!
AV Trip Photo – Golden Garuda Corner – Wat Phra Kaew – Bangkok, ThailandThe symbol of The Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) is I guess the Emerald Buddha himself. However, I feel like over time with the difficulty of snapping a high quality photo of the actual Emerald Buddha, this has actually began to shift. The exterior walls of the Temple are lined with these amazing golden Garudas and they have in my mind, “stole the show.”
If you show this photo to anyone that has been to Wat Phra Kaew and many that have not, they can tell you exactly where it came from. And when YOU visit Wat Phra Kaew for yourself, you’ll also see just how many people are lining up to take photos of these incredible statues and now, the symbol of Wat Phra Kaew according to me!
AV Trip Photo – Kaleidoscope Buddha – Wat Phra Kaew – Bangkok, ThailandAs I wandered almost aimlessly around Wat Phra Kaew, Temple of the Emerald Buddha, I was suddenly drawn to this particular buddha as if I was being hypnotized. I stood there for a moment not only focused on the buddha, but the incredibly symmetrical and colorful background. The greens, golds, reds, and blues are such simple colors, but the pattern they were presented in simply mesmerized me.
This particular buddha is located on one of the corners of the Prasat Phra Thep Bidon (Royal Pantheon) which is a building just next to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. This is just another reminder to make sure you explore this entire site. There is so much to see!
Photo of the Day – Statue Guards of the Emerald Buddha – Bangkok, ThailandThese colorful statues stand guard at Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). The status represent Thotsakhirithon (good luck saying that )and are everywhere in the palace as they guard Thailand’s most sacred temple. The intense colors and intricate details of these statues are what caught my eye. They are equally beautiful and mysterious.
