AV Trip Photo – Orange River Camping – South Africa and Namibian BorderAs a part of our tour, we are primarily camping. Here was our camp site near the Orange River, the border between South Africa and Namibia. The truck you see is what we travel on during the day from place to place. Not bad, huh?
AV Trip Blog – Cape Town Highlights – South Africa
Cape Town rocks! Not to blow anyone’s expectations, but Cape Town well exceeded mine. My original thoughts and pre-conceived visions of Cape Town were a medium-sized city on a rocky coast, a cool mountain behind the city, some wealthy areas, a lot of very impoverished areas, obvious danger on the streets, and basic infrastructure. Almost all of this was wrong. Although some of the coast is rocky, much of it is covered with stunning beaches. That pretty cool mountain is not pretty cool. It is awesome! The infrastructure in the city is well developed. There is very little poverty in the city itself and other than being warned not to walk alone at night, danger felt distanced.
For our first few days in Cape Town we toured by hopping on and off a sightseeing bus which had us mesmerized by beaches, walking the waterfront, sunset watching, wine tasting, and atop Table Mountain. All along the way, we tried our best to capture the feel of Cape Town through the lenses of our cameras. Enjoy!Continue Reading The Full Post >
AV Trip Photo – A Starry Winery Night – Highland Winery – South AfricaOn the first night of our 21 day trek from Cape Town to Victoria Falls, we stayed at a family owned and operated winery, Highland Winery. After wine tasting and dinner, they had a short presentation on stars which inspired us to get out our cameras and capture the moment.
AV Trip Photo – Darkness Falls Over Cape Town – South AfricaWe mentioned a few days ago how much we love Table Mountain. We enjoyed it so much, that we’re questioning whether or not it should be on the AV Top 100 List. While the debate goes on, we wanted to share the view of Cape Town at night from the top of Table Mountain.
AV Trip Photo – Signal Hill Sunset – Cape Town, South AfricaWe spent two of our days in Cape Town exploring the city on a hop-on, hop-off bus tour. The bus was the perfect way to explore everything that Cape Town has to offer. From the urban city center, out to the wineries, down endless dramatic ocean drives and constantly surrounded by beautiful mountains – there is no way you could ride on top of this double decker this bus under the South African sun for two days and not walk away thinking that Cape Town is one of the most extraordinary places in the world!
One evening we took the hop-on, hop-off bus up to Signal Hill to watch the sunset. A popular spot with the locals, this elevated view of the city created a great scene to photograph.
Dottie & Jack’s South African Sunset
Before departing on our epic adventure, friends of ours from Naples (Florida) – Dottie & Jack, handed us a crisp $50 bill and instructed us to have the first drink of the trip on them. After finally settling into Cape Town, months of planning and packing now behind us, we found a great beach to watch the sunset. Over several very relaxing hours we managed to stretch out the $50 into rounds of tasty drinks and a swanky dinner that we’d be embarrassed to talk about back at the hostel.Continue Reading The Full Post >
AV Trip Photo – A Bridge To… – Table Mountain – Cape Town, South AfricaWatching the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean from the top of Table Mountain was nothing short of incredible. Waiting in line to take the cable car back down to Cape Town, we found ourselves already discussing adding Table Mountain as AbsoluteVisit #101. I’m sure this will not be the last time on the trip we instantly fall in love with a place and can’t live with it not being on the list
The top of Table Mountain cleared out soon after the sun fell under the ocean and this empty bridge was left standing alone on the edge of the steep cliff.
