Photo of the Day – Coming Down From A Sugar High – Rio de Janerio, BrazilUpon exiting perhaps the scariest tram ride of your life, the dividends start paying out immediately. The view back towards Rio from the platform is absolutely breathtaking. Look left and your eyes can wander up the full length of the famous Copacabana beach. Focus straight ahead and you can explore the heart of the city, one that goes ignored by most of the tourists who head straight from the airport (far out of right side of the frame) to the steamy beaches. If you squint your eyes and look very closely off in the distance on the right, you can even see Cristo standing tall atop Corcovado mountain, looking over all of the wonder that is Rio de Janeiro and protecting for all to enjoy forever.
Hopefully by now your hands have managed to dry off from the nerve wrecking ride up. Take out your camera and snap away!
Photo of the Day – Favela Swimming Pool – Rio de Janeiro, BrazilSitting out on the wide balcony of my top floor hotel suite while vacationing in Rio de Janeiro, I stared through my long camera lens barrel down twenty-eight floors at a massive rock sitting off of the beach in the warm ocean water. There was a group of young kids who had made there way down from the poor, mountainous favela across the street to their local watering hole for just another day playing under the magical Brazilian sun.
Photo of the Day – On Top of My Favorite City – Cristo – Rio de Janeiro, BrazilOne of the most iconic tourist attractions in the world, the great Christo of Rio de Janeiro does not disappoint. On your first visit to Rio you will frequently catch your eyes wandering up to the top of Corcovado mountain searching for him standing alone, above the city. Each time you spot him, you will pause and tingly chills will run down your spine. Incredible.
On one of your days visiting you leave your bikini hanging in the closet of the hotel room and you ascend the steep mountain that he stands on to meet him in person. He is ten times bigger than you ever imagined and the weight of him above you is powerful. You turn around to see the city that he is protecting and your heart stops. It is at this moment that you confirm within yourself a thought that has lingered with you all week – Rio de Janeiro is the best city in the world.
Photo of the Day – Carnaval Colored Playa – Ipanema Beach – Rio de Janeiro, BrazilWith its dramatic mountainous backdrop, Ipanema Beach is a true contender for the most beautiful urban beach on Earth. During Carnaval the thousands of local beach umbrellas add an extra element of color to the already impressive scenery, creating one of the most vibrant and fun places in the world to lounge for the day.
Photo of the Day – Copacabana Through Foreign Eyes – Rio de Janeiro, BrazilMy lifelong friend, Mike Grendel, accompanied me down to Rio de Janeiro last year to celebrate Carnaval. We took a few breaks from all of the Carnaval fun (read week long all day party) to explore a few of the more popular tourist sites around the city. The best tourist site in Rio is Sugarloaf Mountain and of course that is naturally where we headed first to see a view of one of the most beautiful cities on the planet.
This picture shows Mike staring out through the thick dark sky at the enchanting city below him. A city that he has gotten to know well over the last week as our local friends whisked us all over the city from one Carnaval activity to the next.
I know exactly what is going on in his head at this very moment because I have felt it countless times myself. For over twenty years this view and everything Rio has to offer was completely unknown to Mike. It is at this moment that the entire week spent in Rio is coming together in his head. As he stares off in the distance at the iconic Copacabana Beach gathering his thoughts, his perspective on life quietly expands and he will never be able to view anything through his old lens again.
Photo of the Day – Brazilian Fruit – Rio de Janeiro, BrazilThere is an outstanding fruit market that pops up in the Copacabana neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. Brad and I got lucky and stumbled upon the market one day and were enthralled in the dozens of fruits we had not only never tasted, but had never seen before. One of these fruits is in today’s Photo of the Day.
Unfortunately, I can’t remember what it was! Does anyone know?
Photo of the Day – Praia da Barra, Rio de Janeiro, BrazilWhen most people think about Rio beaches, Ipanema and Copacabana are all that come to mind. Those are both truly impressive fields of sand, but they are certainly not the only beaches in Rio. Take a short 15-minute drive west of Ipanema and you will discover the home of many of the upper-class Cariocas (people of Rio) – Barra de Tijuca. Right out of their doorsteps sits the largest beach in Rio – Praia da Barra.
With over 10 miles of beach you would think finding a place for you to lay out your towel would be a breeze. From the picture below you can tell that a few other friends might also share your plans for a day at the beach!
Two days ago I mentioned a creative photo effect called compression distortion. You can see this effect at work in this picture as well. I shot this image at 170mm which helps make the beach look far more crowded than it actually is.
