The Glacial Surface – Perito Moreno – El Calafate, Argentina

Photo of the Day – The Glacial Surface – Perito Moreno – El Calafate, Argentina

I had no idea just how massive this icy field was until I was standing right in front of its seventy meter high face. As I stood frozen in awe, blocks of ice – larger than cars, periodically made the long fall off of the glacier and came smashing down into the frigid blue water.

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of those places you could just hang out for days, watching in amazement at the normal flow of events taking place around you. Every time ice detached from the glacier, without any conscious signal from my brain, a huge smile came across my face. The experience is nothing short of incredible.

On your way to Perito Moreno Glacier you will actually get several glimpses of it well before you get there. The glacier from afar gives off a Las Vegas like mirage that it is actually close while in fact it is still miles and miles away. What I love about the glacier is not only its size, but also the setting which engulfs the glacier in snow-capped mountains, a beautiful lake and a touch of greenery.

When you visit Perito Moreno Glacier (AbsoluteVisit #32), be sure to take the boat out which gets you fairly close to the glacier. This will really help you to understand just how big this thing is … its freakin’ huge!

What I love about this photo is the crisp blue of the ice coupled with its jagged edges. Unlike a uniform fence, it is intriguing to look back and forth at the edge of the Perito Moreno wall in anticipation of a giant piece of ice plunging into the water below.

In fact, you really can’t get very close to the Glacier for safety reasons. When a 60 foot (~20m) piece of ice falls from a 100 feet (~30m) in the air, it can do some damage! Look out below . . .

Photo of the Day – Perito Moreno Glacier from Lago Argentino – Patagonia, Argentina

We took this photo on our way to see Perito Moreno Glacier while stopping at one of the many vistas. Perito Moreno glacier is a special glacier due to its size, age and beauty. What speaks to me about this particular glacier is its incredible surroundings which, I think, this photo helps to capture. We took this photo in the late spring (early December) and the lush foliage of the trees together with the snow capped mountains and incredible blue skies make for an unforgettable location for AbsoluteVisit’s #1 Glacier (and ranked #33 overall!).

What other glaciers have you been to? Did you find them incredible as well?
