Photo of the Day – A Forbidden Pillar – The Forbidden City – Beijing, ChinaOK, this pillar is not really “forbidden”, but it is located in The Forbidden City! The detail you see on this pillar hints at the incredible detail you will find throughout the Forbidden City. In the background you can see the classic pagoda style orange roofs that adorn the 9,999 rooms of the city. Finally, in the very back you can see Jingshan pagoda which sits atop a small hill next to the Forbidden City.
Photo of the Day – Diving Board Flip – Shanghai Acrobat Troupe – Shanghai, ChinaThe production budget of an acrobat show in China is peanuts compared to a Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas (which you can clearly confirm with your own eyes by looking at the cheap background in this shot). The performance is more pure natural brilliance and less smoke and mirrors.
It is unfathomable to think of how they execute this backflip perfectly night after night. Consider yet, that after the flip in this picture, a fourth guy did an identical rotation one row higher up!
Seeing a performance of the Shanghai Acrobat Troupe is an absolute must when visiting Shanghai. Don’t miss it!
Photo of the Day – Roll With The Hills – Great Wall of China – Near Beijing, ChinaCould you imagine if modern roads were constructed similar to how the Chinese built the Great Wall? Today when a road is built, we dynamite through hills to create a relatively flat road. This makes sense for everyday driving, but wouldn’t it be really cool to have a few roads that rolled naturally with the hills. I’d have a blast flying in a Porsche down this section of the wall!
Photo of the Day – Human Balance Beam – Shanghai Acrobats – Shanghai, ChinaI am honestly not even really sure what to say about this, but … WOW! When I look at this photo I keep looking at each individual man and what they must be focusing on to make sure this works – intense, right?
I must say I’m also a huge fan of this photo thanks to the AbsoluteVisit orange
Photo of the Day – Bamboo Boat on the Li River – Yangshuo, ChinaThe Li River has several ways of enjoying it, but one of the must do’s is to experience the Li River on a bamboo boat. And yes, I know that it is not really bamboo, but hey, its still pretty damn cool!
The karst landscape which makes the Li River an AbsoluteVisit never gets old as it is forever changing. And, wondering if your “bamboo” boat rigged with a lawn mower boat engine is going to make it up the river makes it all the more exciting!
Photo of the Day – Hong Kong Ferry – Hong Kong, ChinaThe Ferry between Hong Kong island and Kowloon is a fantastically efficient service and has some incredible views of both sides that make Hong Kong the incredible metropolis that it is.
When you go to Hong Kong, do not miss out on the Ferry and be sure to not only take it several times, but to also use it morning, noon and night. At each time of the day you’ll have a different take on your surroundings as the sun highlights different areas for your eye to wander into.
Photo of the Day – Inside The Forbidden City – Beijing, ChinaYou really don’t get a sense for just how massive The Forbidden City is until you get inside and start walking around. The palace is made up of close to a thousand buildings spread out over 700,000 square meters right in the heart Beijing. While it is very difficult to ascertain the largest palace in the world, by many measures there is not a more grand complex anywhere in the world!
Photo of the Day – Tai Chi with Swords at the Temple of Heaven – Beijing, ChinaThe Temple of Heaven is the most interesting people watching park in the world. It is full of couples dancing, individuals playing different games, and groups doing Tai Chi. With all of this in mind, I was a bit thrown off to see a group of middle-aged people wielding swords as they performed graceful Tai Chi routines.
This group would have been fantastic to have on your side in the middle ages.
