When I am looking through my camera lens I become a different person. The second my eyeball peers through the viewfinder I lose my outgoing personality and instantly clam up. I find it very difficult to take photos of people and their possessions in public. I know I am not alone here; I think that most people don’t feel comfortable permanently capturing images of people and things that are not theirs.
I took this photo while walking through the famous Chinatown Market in Lima, Peru. I spotted a stack of skinned and gutted dead animals lying out on a counter – not something that I am used to seeing every day. I held down the shutter release and started snapping away. I quickly caught the attention of the shop owner. I thought he was going to come over and yell at me, but to my surprise he swung one of the full dead animals in the air and held it above his head to pose for a quick photo shoot!
